MAOI Testing

MAOI Potency Testing

Turnaround time: 48 hours

Altitude Consulting uses liquid chromatography to test the potency of two common β-carbolines, harmine and harmaline. These two compounds are found in psychedelic mushrooms, Syrian Rue, and Banisteriopsis caapi, and are typically a core part of traditional Ayahuasca ceremonies. β-carbolines have also been found in some psychoactive mushrooms, such as P. cubensis. With the use of the latest HPLC-DAD technology and software we ensure the most accurate results in analyzing these samples.

Compounds Covered:

  • Harmine
  • Harmaline

Instrument Used:

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Common questions

MAOIs shape how psychedelics work. By checking MAOI levels, you promise consistent and satisfying experiences for your clients and customers.

We use a variety of instrumentation for MAOI testing, depending on the test. These include High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Headspace, GC-MS Triple Quadrupole, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MC).

All testing has a small margin of error to account for different factors such as standards, instrumentation, human error, etc. The margin of error that we work within is ±5% for MAOIs.

A lot of research has been done to characterize the relationship between MAOIs and psychedelic effects. After consumption, psilocin and DMT are both eventually broken down in the body. This degradation is catalyzed by MAO A. Inhibiting MAO A with MAOIs slows the break down of psilocin and DMT, increasing their effects.

As of right now, no. After putting countless hours into developing and validating this method, we are finally releasing it. Of course, it completely adheres to ISO 17025 protocols, but we have not had it officially accredited yet. As with everything at Altitude, the next step is getting it into our ISO scope. So, stay tuned because we absolutely plan to be 17025 ISO certified for MAOI testing soon!
